PROGRAMS & ACTIVITIES
A full range of programs and activities take place at the Astor Community Center throughout the year. All activities are open to residents and visitors to Astor.
Monthly Community Dinners offer themed meals prepared by skilled volunteer cooks, fellowship, and an opportunity to catch up on the news of the community. Special programs and speakers are presented throughout the year. The ACA’s Community Dinners are among the community’s special events and are well-attended. It’s a good place to meet neighbors and make new acquaintances.
One of the area’s best Thrift Shops offering high quality and affordable clothing for the whole family and a wide variety of household goods, books, and toys. The ACA Thrift Shop provides an important service to the greater Astor community. The Thrift Shop is managed by Board members Beth McKeeton and Margie Stone along with Eddie Haenisch and staffed by a loyal group of ACA volunteers. Visit the Thrift Shop – you’ll be impressed with what you will find – and at a very affordable price. Astor t-shirts are also on sale at the Thrift Shop.
Donations are greatly appreciated, and are accepted on Tuesdays from 9-Noon and during Thrift ShopHours. Please only leave donations when someone is there to accept them.
Items we cannot accept are TV’s, overstuffed furniture, mattresses, box springs, old used computers, etc.
Join group leader Beth McKeeton for an hour of aerobic exercise and fellowship three mornings each week. Participants engage in an active walking program utilizing various videos. It’s a great walk to stay healthy. (Members $1.00/session – Non-Members $3.00)
We hope to have this up and running in the near future.
The ACA’s annual Holiday Craft Show is held on the first Saturday of December in conjunction with the annual Astor Christmas Parade. The Craft Show attracts skilled artisans from the area who offer unique arts and crafts items perfect for Christmas gifts and home decoration. Lunch is served from the ACA kitchen. Beautiful gift baskets and other items are raffled by Astor clubs and organizations. Come join the fun and get into the Holiday Spirit!
The Holiday Spirit is alive and well at the Astor Community Center on the second Saturday of December each year as the community’s children are treated to breakfast, gifts, face painting, a visit and photo with Santa himself, and the chance to choose and wrap a gift for their parents. All children living in the community are invited to attend. Breakfast for the kids is free. Parents can join their children for breakfast for only $2.50. It’s a fun community event and everyone is invited to come, have breakfast, and enjoy the children. Last year we had 86 Children visit Santa, each received a gift from Santa and stocking.
In addition to the events and activities sponsored by the Astor Community Association, the Community Center is the site of a number of other major community events during the year, including Holiday Craft Fair, the annual Astor Cemetery Breakfast, and the Blackwater Yacht Club’s Annual Party. The Center is available for rent by organizations and individuals for special events, wedding receptions, graduation parties, and other gatherings. Information regarding rental fees and requirements may be obtained by contacting Treasurer Barbara Wallace (352) 759-2203
